Making Cellular Electronic Recharge Widely Available at Low Cost

CHKPIN is an innovative and trustworthy recharge system designed to overcome the common problems associated with the distribution and use of physical and electronic recharge vouchers. As an outsourced service, CHKPIN also avoids the common problems experienced by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Service Providers (SPs) in deploying electronic/virtual recharge solutions, especially in under-developed environments.

The service is designed to be rapidly deployed; integrating seamlessly with the MNO's current systems. With CHKPIN, there is no need to continually distribute physical vouchers and no need to supply or maintain specialised retail equipment. There are two versions of CHKPIN, one that utilises PINs and the other that is PIN-les.

Cost-Effective Virtual Recharge Solution

The CHKPIN service is cost-effective to use because it requires no point of sale terminals at Dealers and does not need special SIM cards. All that is required is a GPRS-enabled handset, which means that the high logistics costs associated with physical recharge distribution are also eliminated. Charges are levied per transaction, thereby reducing the costs significantly for the Super Dealer.

The Lightest Network Load

CHKPIN lightens the network resource load by utilising simple, cheap Internet-based commands for most transactions. This reduces costs, congestion and delays.

Available Everywhere

CHKPIN makes it possible for recharge to be widely and consistently available to consumers. This is because CHKPIN works wherever the cellular network is available. All it requires is the use of the MNOs network-approved GPRS-enabled handset, therefore making it possible for any person with this type of handset to become a Runner (Street Vendor). Having this scope of availability creates the potential for increasing Average Revenue Per User.

Recharge Available for All Networks

The same GPRS-enabled service can be used on one handset across all networks. This allows the Super Dealer to sell more than one network's recharge airtime and increase their opportunity to sell to all potential consumers. This is dependent on the Super Dealer acquiring permission from the networks to sell their products and integrate with the CHKPIN service.

Example 1: How it Works

CHKPIN mimics the physical recharge card supply chain by allowing value to pass from the MNO to the Service Provider, from the Service Provider to the Super Dealer, from the Super Dealer to the Dealer and finally from the Dealer to the Runner (Street Vendor). The Runner, therefore, has the ability to sell airtime from his/her mobile phone to customers needing to top-up their accounts.

Example 2: Customer Experience (PIN-less version)

The consumer goes to the Runner (Street Vendor) who asks the consumers for their mobile phone number. The Runner then submits the consumer's mobile phone number via an internet-based recharge service using GPRS services and selects the amount of airtime requested. The consumer will then have their account automatically topped-up and they will also receive a confirmation SMS.  

Example 3: Customer Experience (PIN version)

The consumer goes to the Runner (Street Vendor) who asks the consumers for their mobile phone number. The Runner then submits the consumer's mobile phone number via an internet-based recharge service using GPRS services and selects the amount of airtime requested. The Runner will receive a PIN which he/she will then pass on to the consumer.

 Key Features & Benefits for the Super Dealer, Dealer and Runner:

  • No investment required in terminals or other special equipment by Dealers except for a mobile handset that is capable of utilising GPRS. We suggest that the Super Dealer sets the standard by requiring the Runners to use one type of handset which will simplify the relationship and reduce technical complexity. It will then be the entry level requirement for the Runner
  • No need for Super Dealer, Dealer or Runner to travel to collect physical vouchers
  • No risk of theft of vouchers as there are no vouchers
  • No risk of fraud associated with PIN numbers printed openly on "till slips"
  • Dealer can monitor levels of "recharge stock" of each Runner remotely using GPRS
  • Runner's "recharge stock" can be topped-up remotely, 24 hours a day
  • Runner's "recharge stock" cannot be stolen provided he/she uses existing SIM card security lock features.
